February 22 - Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems is published.
March 29 - Treaty of Saint-Germain signed, returning Quebec to French control after the English had seized it in 1629.
April 15 - Battle of Rain: Swedes under Gustavus Adolphus defeat the Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty Years' War.
June 25 - Susenyos' son, Emperor Fasilides, declared the state religion of Ethiopia to again be Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, and expelled the Jesuit missionaries and other Europeans.

July - December

July 23 - 300 colonists for New France depart Dieppe.

November 6 - Battle of Lützen, death of king of Sweden Gustav II Adolf. Unbeknownst to everybody in Stockholm, his daughter Christina becomes queen after her father's death. When the news reaches Stockholm, she's made queen, while Axel Oxenstierna takes over as regent for her (until 1644) since she's under-age.

November 8 - Wladyslaw IV Waza elected king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after Sigismund III Vasa's death.
